The Story

Weta Workshop was thrilled to work on the epic trilogy that was The Hobbit™, contributing design, specialty props and specialty costumes.

It takes hundreds of hours to design, sculpt, model make, mold, and paint the prototype for each new Middle-earth piece. Whether it be a prop replica, beautiful environment, or iconic character, we treat our collectibles with the same level of care and attention to detail that we bring to our film work.

For centuries he slumbered. A vast, scaly weight pressing down upon the stolen wealth of Erebor™, breathing the stale air of a kingdom’s tomb. In the darkness, the dragon and his hoard became one. No longer just a guardian of the gold, Smaug became the very embodiment of greed, his hide mirroring the glittering coins he coveted above all else.

Smaug the Golden creates a striking "what if" narrative, imagining the Fire Drake fused with the very treasure he guards.

To achieve this lustrous, treasure-hoarding aesthetic, our artists have employed a specialised metallic foiling technique. This complex application coats the scales and skin in a shimmering layer of gold, simulating the effect of aeons spent crushing dwarven fortunes beneath his might. Yet, amidst this metallic armour, the eyes and maw remain disturbingly organic; a visceral reminder that a living, breathing monster still lurks beneath the gilt.

Limited to an Edition Size of just 900, this piece retains all the intricate texture of the original bust while offering a completely new aesthetic. Designed for versatility, the bust can be displayed standing on a flat surface or mounted on a wall.

Features:

  • Limited Edition of just 900
  • Primarily made from polystone
  • Depicts an interpretation of Smaug, as if the treasure of Erebor had fused with his skin
  • Metallic foil application gives the illusion of gold fused with flesh
  • Perfectly sized to see the menace and ferocity in every scale up-close
  • 180° swivel allows for both standing display and wall-mounting
  • Sculpted by Weta Workshop veteran Andrew Baker

“Our authentic prop replicas and collectibles are designed by the very same artists who have worked on the three films, so effectively they come straight from Middle-earth.”

- Richard Taylor - CEO & Co-founder, Weta Workshop

  • Ages: 14-99
  • Country of origin: China

Smaug the Golden can either stand on a flat surface or hang on the wall. Just loosen the bolt, turn Smaug's head 180 degrees on its base and fasten the bolt again.

Each statue is hand painted and minor variations may occur. Please Note: Smaug the Terrible is supposed to have a horn on either side of his head missing from a battle long ago. Being a dragon is hard work.
